I want to learn digital painting and illustration, what is the best way to start on my own?

I can't afford going to collage so what should I do?I want to learn digital painting and illustration, what is the best way to start on my own?
Community colleges offer great courses in the latest computer graphics applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel and others.

These are VERY low cost and, are usually based on a per unit basis. I have to mention, if you can't afford the cost of community college, you will not be able to afford the cost of purchasing the software to do digital painting and illustration. (I have almost $4,000 in software, alone, plus equipment. And I don't even have the latest versions of most!)

The other advantage of learning the craft in college is that you can get TREMENDOUS discounts on the software, only offered to students.

Many years ago, I purchased a very early version of Photoshop. I spent many frustrating months trying to master even a few, basic functions. A single semester of taking a basic Photoshop, Illustrator, and Pagemaker class took me much farther than I'd ever would have gone without the classes. I went back for the advanced classes in these and other applications, such as QuarkXPress and other print technology classes.I want to learn digital painting and illustration, what is the best way to start on my own?
I simply cannot believe that someone is actually advising you to go out and spend money when you are first starting out! The only thing you need to spend money on is a graphics tablet ($50). Other than that, search for open source alternatives for the high priced software such as Inkscape, and Gimp

I use MS paint, photoshop, and paint shop pro. Paint most people try to use the brush or pencil tool but it works alot easier if you use tools like curved line, and the shapes, photoshop is good for croping images and coloring. Paint shop pro is good for changing specific colors. Using paint shop pro and photoshop can be confusing, but reading instructions and tutorials helps. Animators use stencils and a pad, so if you really want to spend money on that, go ahead, but i just draw, scan, and trace sometimes. Look at others work, sometimes on youtube they have people drawing, looking at these helps train the eye. Good luck.
The best thing I can suggest is to use as many different programs as you can.......photoshop paint shop pro picassa....etc. find out what works for you personally and enjoy experimenting, any mistakes you make become part of the process......oh yeah and get a flickr account join some of the beginners groups the ones doing digital art etc. you will always find some one to get advice from
