Digital painting (realistic) help?

um... It's hard XD

First try at it, just finished this afternoon. http://swimmengal.deviantart.com/art/Gac…

Skin. I need help with skin- I don't understand how I'm supposed to do it O_O

( I understand that the hair looks even worse then crap, but I had given up at that point)

I think the eyes came out very well, but other then that- blah!

Anyone have tips for painting skin? cause it did not come out right...Digital painting (realistic) help?
art is actually pretty good, does appear some what vectored, but still good, suggest keeping that as one step and use duplicate to continue,

with program try using airbrush tool with less pressure and or create new brush with less hardness on edges, if you are using tablet, adjust pressure settings to be in sync with editor settings,

some hair techniques vary, simple strokes are good, usually with tablet, another method is using pen tool to draw lines, and then convert path to stroke, then with set of strokes duplicate in new layer and use as stamp/brush and repeat,

use separate layers for each item or part, hair/ face/ eyes, save main program file, you can use gradient blend for some selections, the smudge and blur tools to mix and blend,

other note is that the shading is separate from shadows, you can apply different tones to add curvature effect to face, yet the shadowing from light source sometimes is forgotten, try new over layer, and use black/gray to only add shadow from choice of light source and highlites, the use overlay layer mode to combine,

________

sometimes images are re edited in vector format or posterized to separate color levels, for some creative design, some use 3d poser editors to make characters, the repaint as image rendering,

Looks nice! Try adding more yellows and oranges to the skin. Google images of people's faces and notice how many different colors occur and try to add some of that variation to your painting.
