Digital oil painting tips and tricks?

Hi all!

I'm looking for sites that offer tips and tricks on how to get oil paint effects and appearance via digital means, using Corel Painter specifically. Such as getting a closer appearance to the traditional look of oil paintings.

IMPORTANT

I'm not at all interested in filters, or painters clone, quick clone or auto clone features editing original photographs to make them appear like oil paintings. That, to me, is cheating and the computer doing all the work.

So I'm looking for tips and tutorials etc. on getting the oil paint look by hand, with hard work, to create artwork that's original and resembles oil painting, and not how a 14yr old on Deviantart would do it with filters and claim it as art. :P

Thanks!

I'll say again, no filters, cloning or faking tutorials tips and tricks, those don't interest me and offer no creativity. But I know someone is going to link to one, lol.Digital oil painting tips and tricks?
If you do not already have this in your background, the one thing that will provide the experience so many digital artists lack is hands-on familiarity with traditional tools and paints. Work with the real thing and you will have a door to a dimension directly available to you. Writing out 5-20 books of information will not do that for you.

You will find a wide variety of information and, more importantly, people with the experience in both digital and traditional mediums here:

How can i leave the digital camera(sony DSC w210) shutter opened to do some light painting?

i have came of some of those light paintings lately and i want to know for real how i can just make the shutter opened so i would be able to do that i need help plz my camera is Sony Cybershot DSC-w210How can i leave the digital camera(sony DSC w210) shutter opened to do some light painting?
W210 does not have shutter priority, aperture priority or manual mode. It is pretty hard to do. You may try to set to the lowest ISO value and turn off the flash. You may be able to get an exposure of 1 or 2 seconds.

I want to have my son's bike painted in Digital Camo. Does anyone know a company that does that? ANYWHERE.?

Im pretty sure I will have to have it sent off, which is fine. If anyone can help it would be great. Thanks!I want to have my son's bike painted in Digital Camo. Does anyone know a company that does that? ANYWHERE.?
First thing YOU want his bike painted camo? Does he want it that color? Anyway you can just go to a car customization shop and have them do it. My friend did that once and he had it painted a sick flourescent black!I want to have my son's bike painted in Digital Camo. Does anyone know a company that does that? ANYWHERE.?
bike has to be completely disassembled. then sandblasted, cleaned, then custom paint. that'll be alot of money. then put it all back together again. you could contact the people at ';realtree'; to see if they will dip it for you. that's how they do it for solid objects. if you got the money anything can be done for a price.

A GOOD painting/digital art program?!?!?

I make some small graphics in my free time, just for fun. I like using programs with special effects and brushes because the backgrounds of these images are very key in the quality and overall appearance. I have been previously using the free trial of Corel IX painter, that worked very very well for me, however, I don't want to buy it and my trial is up, ((setting the computer's clock back doesn't work)). So I am wondering if there are any similar programs out there that are FREE and are of GOOD QUALITY? thanks for the help. =)A GOOD painting/digital art program?!?!?

  • I want to enhance a digital picture on my computer so that it looks like a painting. I have a Mac.?

I want to take a picture and make it look like a painting. I know I can download (for a fee) a program that does this, but I was wondering if iPhoto might have this feature, though I'm not hopeful. Please help if you can. Thanks!I want to enhance a digital picture on my computer so that it looks like a painting. I have a Mac.?
As far as I know iPhoto does not have any painting tools. It is an image organizer and basic photo editor (it lets you make some basic corrections to photos).

There is a version of Gimp for Macs (actually I think there are a couple) but you may find both the installation and use a little confusing. It's a free image editor similar to Photoshop, although the interface is different. But it's OpenSource and free. Go here if you want more info:

    http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/

Other than that, your best bet may be to buy Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac. It's less than $100 vs. the full version of Photoshop which will be $600 to $900.

Another option would be to buy Corel Painter X. It is specifically designed to help you create more artistic effects/painting effects.

    Good luck!

If a person is good with painting on a digital program with the computer...?

... does that mean that they'll be good at painting with real paint? If a person is good with painting on a digital program with the computer...?
If they are willing to put up with the learning curve of the medium, then yeah.

Painting digitally is no different than painting traditionally. You still pick colors from a palette, and you still paint every stroke with a brush (i.e. pen tablet). You still have to worry about composition, color harmony, anatomy, and perspective.

You have some tools (like layers, undo, and a 16.7 million color palette) that speed up the process, but otherwise it really isn't any different. There are filters that can render certain effects, but any real artist will naturally make limited use of such things as they tend to look artificial. Even so, filters are not unlike painting traditionally using mixed media.

One can't just make the switch from digital to traditional at the flip of a switch, though. They will need to learn to mix colors, how to manage ';wet'; and ';dry'; areas, and how to work with the drying time of the medium. Still, learning those things is not unlike learning all the features of Photoshop to get the desired effects.

Bottom line, every medium has a learning curve, but no matter what the medium - digital or traditional - the art will only be as good as the artist painting with it. The medium doesn't make the art.

Is the Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet any good for digital painting?

i really enjoy digital painting, and a mouse is somewhat limiting when it comes to using the digital media. i really want to get some kind of tablet, probably from wacom, as they are a very reputable brand.

i need to get one of the cheaper ones, as i dont have alot of money to spend on this, around 拢100

i have looked at the wacom bamboo range, and i like the look of the wacom bamboo pen tablet, and the wacom bamboo pen and touch, although im leaning towards just the pen and touch one, as its not that much more expensive.

so is it any good for digital painting? i know its quite small, thats why i was wondering. and also, i work on a windows XP professional version 5.1

thanks in advanced for any answers :)Is the Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet any good for digital painting?
Any graphic tablet will work fine for any sort of work that requires detail that you can accomplish on a regular pen or brush instead of the mouse. Is the Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet any good for digital painting?
Lol, that's the purpose of a tablet, for graphic arts and such. It makes live a lot easier than a mouse.

Need some help with my very first digital painting... any tips much appreceated?

    Hi everyone,

well just recently I started learning about digital painting... and now after some nice practice, I am currently working on my very first digital painting, which is of course very simple portrait of my self :) I guess everyone's first digital painting is their portrait :))

The stage I am currently in you can see here:

    http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd112/nikolavejin/me.jpg

As you can see I did most of the painting, it's not any close to finish I think, and mostly it's still very rough in places as you can see, so I guess now I need to work on details for a while...

Now I would really appreciate if you could look at this painting and give me some tips on what's good and what is bad on painting, and what should I do with it next... in other language, I need some professional thoughts at this moment, and anything you say about it would be very helpful for me since I am very willing to fix any mistakes and make this looks good.

Tnx ;)Need some help with my very first digital painting... any tips much appreceated?
    OK it's looking pretty good!

One area to pay attention to would be the neck where it joins the shirt collar. You don't want it to look as though the neck is sort of oozing over the collar. You'll need to do some shading there and also probably soften the shadow under the jaw; it's very hard and still looks a lot like a photograph with flash.

Overall there's a lot you can do with developing the range of tonal values (darks and lights) but it really depends on how much of a poster-painting effect you want. Other than that you could just look at your edges and smooth things out a little.

I looks like you've been enjoying yourself, congratulations!Need some help with my very first digital painting... any tips much appreceated?
very nice! The main change i would make is that the top lip is really thin. the other thing is the eyes are a bit lifeless and you don't seem to have any lashes. the shirt and neck could also use some work. over all its very nice though.
I find lots of ideas and tips from Photoshop Creative and Advanced Photoshop magazines. There are sister magazines for Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro and Corel Painter. There have been some tutorials on pencil and charcoal shading techniques that you might find interesting. Each mag has a web site,It depends which application you use but most of them can be tweaked to work like Photoshop as far as key board short cuts. Try working with Layers and Blending modes that way you can do some really subtle effects and over working isn't a problem as you can save at many stages and not risk spoiling anything. If you use a pen pad the shortcuts speed up working especially if you can use both hands at once! If you are drawing from scratch your first go is impressive, mine looked like a knitting pattern but that was in 1980s on an old BBC machine.

You are not asking correctly. It is not tablet PC but Pen tablet. Yes I am using it %26amp; it's fine but it gives along with it it Photoshop %26amp; Corel Painter's 15 days trial version. As because I am having full version of both so i don't have any problem but with trial you will get svchost.exe error. My pen tablet is from i ball.

I just did a digital painting this morning! I posted it on mg blog

    http://jamesbiddulph.wordpress.com/

As for yours, its really good, just blend the colours but using a brush that is about 50% opacity with the colours that are next to each other.

Also, you should try getting some more colours in it, like reds and blues, but really subtle, cause skin isn't just one colour. Generally there is red on the cheeks and blue around the chin. Adding some irregularities using speckled brushes.

Im still only learning this stuff too, Im an illustration student, so if you find anything else out be sure to let me know, people only get better by sharing work around!Need some help with my digital painting... any tips and thoughts much appreciated?

You clearly execute the process well, but it needs more 'art'. Either by

    1. making the original photo more intense, or

    2. by processing the image in Photoshop prior to painting with intensified FX, or

    3. in your end game with the paint.

    For exampe

    1. you could rather than taking a portrait as usual, have someone dumping a huge bucket of cold water over your head, so your expression is one of real shock, and the water bends the light in all these interesting ways. you could have powerful lighting from above or behind, but with a black background making the whole thing very vivid and alfred hitchcock quality lighting.

    2. then once you have the photo uploaded, you can manipulate it in photoshoppe with all kinds of filters and the like. You could slightly stretch the image vertically, or have a fade to white around the edges, or reverse emboss the water contours giving it a dimentional shift, or add a silvery greenish neon kind of glow to the highlights making the whole thing kind of alien and compelling.

    3. Then in the painting stage, rather than going as exact as possible, let your brush strokes further the work with smears and pallette knife cuts etc.

By the end you have your artistic hand in every aspect of the work's creation. Even the untrained eye can percieve complex processes behind your finished product, and they'll want to look at it longer to try and figure that. And as they continue to look, you have a higher chance of making a sale, and more importantly moving your viewer to feel something. Cause that's the whole point of art, isn't it?Need some help and thoughts about my digital painting... any tips much appreciated?
WOW! That's awesome!!! Not to shabby for a beginner!!! ;)

The only thing that could change a little is the hair.... the sides by ur ears look flat.. maybe a little more color transition to make it look like it is wrapping around the back of ur head....

Top of hair looks choppy where as everything else look so smooth and real... The part going through the middle of ur head (From left to right) could be more gradual...

Also... maybe add some shadow from ur hair... it looks a little separated from ur forehead and ears...

Good luck! I like it allot! :)

When I am trying to do a digital painting in photoshop CS3 it ends up very pixelated. How can I stop this?

I am not sure what I am doing wrong. My image is 300dpi so I would have through I should be able to produce smooth lines/curves. Please help it is driving me bonkers! When I am trying to do a digital painting in photoshop CS3 it ends up very pixelated. How can I stop this?
Hmm, 300dpi doesn't mean anything on its own. Your actual image could be 10 pixels by 10pixels at 300dpi it would still be pixellated!

I suspect the problem is simply an image size problem. Try experimenting with the canvas size set it to like 1000x1000 pixels and see if that helps (Image -%26gt; Canvas Size then change units to pixels)

The dpi setting is generally used for relative print size.

Hope this helps!:)When I am trying to do a digital painting in photoshop CS3 it ends up very pixelated. How can I stop this?
I would have to see the actual image to know what the problem is because it doesn't make sense to me. If you're actually creating in photoshop there shouldn't be any pixelization since it's a fresh document.

If you're concerned because you're seeing the pixels and you have your magnification over 200%, well, that's just normal. Images are composed of pixels and these pixels are shown when . Try hitting the magnifying glass and then on the toolbar directly above the image hit either ';actual pixels'; or ';print size'; and that will give you an idea of what your image actually looks like.

Feel free to email me with other questions, but with your short explanation I don't really know what else could be going on.

    EDIT:

Me does have a good point, if you don't want to deal with pixels at all then you'll need to use a program like Illustrator that does vector images.
Photoshop uses bitmap images. And JPG and other image formats have limits. Adobe Illustrator is what you need. Illustrator uses vector images which have NO edges and DOES NOT use pixels.
Might just be the resolution on your computer....

If not, try using a smaller brush.

    That happens to me sometimes.

    Hope I helped!
Lol your are on a computer.

The best shading/blending methods for digital painting...?

I've been doing digital paintings/airbrushings for about a year and a half now. I recently (last month) purchased Corel Painter X, after using Photoshop Elements 5.0 for about a year. Painter is MUCH more effective for paintings. I use the Wacom Intous3 tablet.

Now, after working a LOT, with Painter over the past few weeks--I'm wondering what the best shading/blending methods are. Or, what brushes are best to use for what. I mainly work on horses--and all animals. I occasionally do humans, but not nearly as often as beasts.

You can see my entire gallery here, paintedjewel.deviantart.com I have yet to submit any works that I've done with Painter, because my Internet really hasn't been cooperative.

Now, here is a direct link to the gallery (the other links to the main page): http://paintedjewel.deviantart.com/gallery/ My most recent being, ';Kitanii WIP';.The best shading/blending methods for digital painting...?
lot of sites offer the tips and tutorials. But don't get carried away , the best way to blend is by the trail and error method. Find your own style and method ,Necessity is the Mother of all Inventions :)

Photoshop Elements 6 or 7 for digital painting?

I recently bought a computer that runs on Vista, which is totally incompatible with the Photoshop Elements 3 that I currently own. Thus, I find myself forced to make an upgrade. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give a bit of advice on which version of elements to go with.

The full on version of photoshop is unfortunately a bit too pricey, but I was able to find one-time instant downloads of the software for elements 6 for $30 and 7 for $45 at http://www.mycheapsoft.com/search.php?search_query=photoshop%26amp;x=23%26amp;y=4. I use it mostly for digital painting, so I would value: a variety of brushes, easy to navigate canvas, little lagging, and ability to have many, many layers :D

Also, does that site seem legitimate to you, or a scam? The deal is almost too good...Photoshop Elements 6 or 7 for digital painting?
Why not install a dedicated drawing/painting program? There are some very good free and inexpensive ones available.

I know some young artists who've done wonderful work with ArtRage. Here's a link to ArtRage on DeviantArt.

http://www.deviantart.com/#order=9%26amp;q=Art鈥?/a>Photoshop Elements 6 or 7 for digital painting?
If version 6 is cheaper, go for it. Both versions meet your requirements. Also for one time downloads prices usually are cheaper, and even that seems expensive for a one time download since I got Photoshop Elements 7 (Boxed/new) at Costco for $60.

For more of a comparison, I would check the reviews of both products at amazon.com

How can I improve my digital painting?

Obviously it is a work in progress but I would love to hear advice from artists who have been through this learning process. How can I improve my digital painting?
Same way you would traditionally..... DRAWDRAWDRAW some more.

You're doing well, I would like to see you improve your understanding of anatomy and form. By pushing forms and clearly defining shapes will make things pop and feel more real. Study the skull, study anatomy of the head. How can I improve my digital painting?
    I agree with Puppy.
    Nice work.

    Few tips.

    1) Get your sketch right. (see %26lt;frankie's comment) Leave it in a layer under your painting so you can check on it.

    2) Faces work very well if you make it in layers and play with transparency and switch them around. One white one 'pink' and one in earth tones. The white layer is for your highlights. For makeup and for hair you use different layers also so they will not be affected when you modify the face.

    3) Color your shades. Do not just darken them but ad to it to liven them up. Again Make a layer for the shades so you can revert adapt or chuck the result.

    3) Work at full opacity if you use layer transparency and then move the slider back to the transparency you want.

  • How should i practice in digital painting?

hey i m a beginner in digital painting

    and i don't know how should i practice ?

i don't know if that is a good idea

or should i move to the next lesson and so...

but then i got bored and quit for like 2 months

how should i know that i 'm progressing

    i feel like i m in a repeated circle

    i am bad

really bad when it comes to manage my time..How should i practice in digital painting?
Everyone becomes a master by practicing as long as it is done with interest and a motivated toward clear goal in sight. Mindless repetition can lead nowhere. You can move onto a next lesson when you become bored with the one you are working on. Even if you have not mastered that lesson you will see it in from a different perspective once you move on. You can always, and may have to, go back later either to reinforce or to learn take another stab at getting it right. When you scoot over lessons without fully mastering them you can only get so far before you need that skill. The beauty in this is that when you have moved ahead until you can go no further without mastering that lesson, you have all of that experience that helps provide a real need for the information in that lesson. That may just be enough to make the process so interesting the second or third time around that you gain the most out of it.How should i practice in digital painting?
    Hello Vetani

    ';Everyone Becomes a master by practicing';

I used to do digital painting to, and i know what are you talking about. Sometimes you get to tired of doing the same.

What you should do is to go to www.deviantart.com , there you should search some digital painting tutorial, so in that way you don't practice with the same thing. Also you should make an account there, so you can submit your artworks and get comments about them, it is a nice community, they help you and advice you.

Add friends, tell them about your problem and they will certainly advice you the best way, belive me it worked for me. Plus, you practice And you make friends.

Watch videos on youtube, visit blogs and buy a graphics tablet, start with a simple one and once you mastered the art of digital painting , go pro! :)

    As I say : ';If you want, you can';
    Vetani,

I've learned many new things in my life, and nothing makes you quit practicing faster than boredom! Practicing something repeatedly can be like someone giving you a nugey (rubbing your head, hard, in the same place). So, if you've done the same lesson several times, but feel like you need more work with it, choose a different subject to practice on. Or, just go ahead to the next lesson. We all need to practice to grow, but we also have to grow to practice well, or understand what the practice has taught us. Have fun with the lessons.

To track your progress, save a print out of each lesson in a binder or journal. You don't have to save them all, just the one you think is best. After you have collected a few, go back and take a look at them. You see just how much better you have gotten.

Time management can be challenging for all of us. I use a ';To Do'; list. I put things I need to do on a list for each day. Then each one I finish I cross off with a highlighter of my favorite color. I make sure I keep that ';promise' with myself each day. It makes me feel good about myself.

Things to change in this digital painting? (because the art catagory is always dead)?

I'm posting here because the art catagories always seem dead, for whatever reason. Because of that I don't ever get decent feedback. :(

    Okay!

So, this is a WIP still- aka NOT DONE.

I've got to work on his hair, feathers, eyes, and get rid of the outlines (including the eyebrows that I'll be redoing in brown rather then black)...

So... Is there anything I've missed? Anything I might want to change before I put in more hours of work on this only to find that I've screwed up somewhere and ruin the picture?

please comment, you don't have to be an artist to be able to see flaws- so just point them out if you see any :)

(but keep in mind that it's not done, and the things I've already said i'm going to work on more)Things to change in this digital painting? (because the art catagory is always dead)?
I think it looks great so far. I really like the the hair - but you said you're getting rid of the outlines? (Are you trying to reproduce the original exactly then?) I guess the shape of the lips is pretty spot on, it's just outline of the upper right lip that looks a little off. I'm not a pro or anything, but that's my opinion.

Ah now you've given me the kick start to go and do something useful, well done.Need some help with my digital painting... any tips and thoughts much appreciated?
Alike everyone else here, I have no experience in digital painting. The green tones on the chin are a little weird and the hair and lips need a little more highlighting. Other than that, I'm IMPRESSED! Excellent work! The picture looks very nice *wink wink* LOL!
I do more design than art in the digital world, but one resource I LOVE to use when it comes to learning new techniques is the wonderful world of YouTube. There are thousands of tutorials by people who like to share their techniques, and make it easy to follow along. You can get new ideas and try out new things just by watching someone else work.

As you try out the new things, you'll learn what techniques you like, what looks and styles you like, and start to develop a style of your own!

While I'm not a digital artist, my friend is, and I asked him and these are his favorite youtube videos on the subject:

    Photoshop/digital painting question?

I would like to hear other artists' opinions regarding the use of photos in their pieces, specifically using Photoshop for digital painting. To narrow down the techniques, I'll share 3 common ones: 1) Painting over photos e.g. painting over a face 2) Cutting and pasting photos to produce a new image 3)Sampling part of a photo to make a custom brush/stamp to paint with. In all techniques mentioned above, the photos are either personal ones or royalty free.

Which techniques do you think are ethically acceptable? Do you use any of the aforementioned techniques (and if not, I'd love to hear YOURS.)? If you think it's wrong to use photos in these methods, how is it different from producing a collage the old fashioned way?

Personally, I use a little bit of #2 and use #3 intensively. I also employ texture overlays. I'm looking forward to reading your opinions, and sorry if this was a bit long to read!Photoshop/digital painting question?
Heya...before any manipulations. Adjust your levels first. :) To answer ';what is ethically acceptable?'; is an essay within itself. For painting, I like to use softer brushes with the opacity reduced to about 10-60 percent. This makes for more control and less command + z's. I then tune in the layer that contains the ';brush strokes'; with blending modes and opacity control. Seasoned pros use the pen tool to cut images and then soften the edges with blur effects or simple feathering. Texture overlays are smashing. Most methods are coupled with other methods, of course. ;)

Adjustment Layers and Masks are a Godsend. Fragmented answers, but I hope to start a dialog.

Wear rubbers and adjust your levels.

    Truly, SelenePhotoshop/digital painting question?
I'm super beginner when it comes to the how to's of using photos but I love this form of art. I think it's best to use old photos, or your own photos ,not only to avoid copyright issues but to assure originality. And then why not collage WITH your altered photos?! Fun. Selene, I have a trial copy of Corel Essentials 4,,, what do you think of this program?

*holds out tray of chocolate chip cookies*

but you may only have one cookie.Critic on a digital painting?
Well im not an expert on digital painting, but in my experience the best way to make any image look better is to get a good reference image and then critically look at how your image compares... Especially with the tones in your picture and how they blend.

For example, the hair could have more highlights (where the original looks white) and the make-up under the eyes could blend more...

So i think your biggest issue is experimenting with different brush styles... play around with the brush's opacity, texture, softness and size... Also black lines around any image makes it look cartoony (dunno if you were going for that look).

All in all a great picture! just keep playing around and experience will turn you into a veteran :D EnjoyCritic on a digital painting?
Hey! Its actually really good! I like it alot, even if I'm not such a fan of your subject..No offence or anything!! Um, the only constructive critisism I could possibly give is maybe try to get away from the harsh lines and go for something more realistic, more shadows. But I really like the way you redid it, good job!

First digital painting. It's an Australian Cattle Dog. I'm 15 years old, and have been drawing dogs for almost a year.

Does it look okay, and what could I do to improve?

I think you did quite well with the digital drawing.

I think the most important thing you should improve on here is the fur. Here, your fur has clearly been blended or blurred. And even though it takes a lot of time and concentration (especially when using a mouse), the end results will be absolutely amazing. I took the time to find a fur tutorial for you and found this might be helpful for you.

  • Question on digital painting in the Illustration industry? Any professionals out there who can help?

I always got the feeling that digital painting as an art form is seen as inferior to other methods, i'm not sure why... possibly because it is often associated with the sci-fi/fantasy genre, which some people don't like... (but i do) but i was wondering if it is common for illustrators to use digital painting, and i don't mean tweaking and touching up hand-done pictures on Photoshop, i mean the full-on painting! Is it a respected medium? Does it depend on the area of illustration? If so which areas?

Basically, i wish to know if digital painting would be a worthwhile skill to develop for a *fingers crossed* future in illustration. i'm new to it, and i enjoy it, but i don't want to spend hours perfecting something that won't go very far in the professional world.

Strange question, i know, but something i've been wondering for a while now and can't find a definative answer to!

thanks!Question on digital painting in the Illustration industry? Any professionals out there who can help?
I think, just like any other media out there, digital painting has a market. I have done an entire book using only CG. My point of view, you choose your own media and what will work best for each project. If you prefer digital, you will find the right clients. As far as learning a new skill, it is always worth while! Only draw back I see to CG is that you can end up spending far too much time on a single illustration as the possibilities for change are never ending.

Help! Digital Painting in Photoshop CS4?

    Hi,

I really want to paint, but I always quickly lose my motivation after I finish my sketch; also, all the ideas that I have. I want to find a good motivation for me, so that I can finish my work/art.

I tried to look some digital painting on deviantart, and those digital painting seemed to motivate me, but the motivation I got did not last long.

I think what demotivates me is my lack of technique. I am not too sure about that. Plus, I play video games too, and I think that hinders me to focus on my digital art.

I am using the Wacom Bamboo now if I got really motivated I am going to get the better tablet. I am still a rookie, but I can draw. Right now, I am trying to focus on sci-fi/fantasy type digital art.

    Photoshop Digital Painting.?

I am specifically looking for someone to tell me how to set my brushes up for digital painting in photo shop cs3. I kept being told ';Opacity jitter to pen pressure'; But it never turns out the way I want it to. Thanks in advanced.Photoshop Digital Painting.?
If I were you I would try the airbrush and use the small setting for the outlines of your drawing and the larger brushes for filling in your color.

And set the pressure for the brushes about 1/4 from the start of the slide adjustment. And change the brush size when needed

.Airbrushing gives a lot smoother effect then the pen.does.

Digital painting techniques - Which one to use??

Well I am just learning some digital painting in Photoshop... and I found several digital painting styles, most popular being smudge style where you use smudge tool in Photoshop to create smooth transitions between color, and other style where you don't use smudge tool but making those transitions only with brush tool with different variations on brush color and opacity...

So which of those two styles can you reccomend me as a better one and why? Which one do you use? I tried both but still not sure which one should I stick to, and what is the difference in results...

So I just need some tips on coloring those transitions after putting some rough colors... Any tips much appreaceated...

    Thanks :))

Digital painting techniques - Which one to use??
There IS no one, better way. The reason applications like Photoshop have so many different ways to do things is so that the user can pick the method that works in that particular situation.

There is NO advantage for you to pick only one to stick to. In fact, it would be a much better idea for you to experiment and practice MANY different styles. What works in one image, may not work as well in another. You can make color transitions with the blur took and the airbrush, and with the gradient. You can go to the individual color chanels and make the blends that way, for completely different results. You can mask, and feather a selection. You can adjust the transparency of certain parts of a layer. And there are several more methods.

The point is that each one produces different results, so that the artist is free to choose which works best. Spending hundreds of dollars on Photoshop, only to limit oneself to a few, ';favorite'; methods, is like spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a fast road car, only to make endless left turns on an oval. A waste of a LOT of performance.Digital painting techniques - Which one to use??
Good question. It really depends on what your doing at that moment. Some art styles, like lineart coloring, use both styles. Besides, there are many styles, these are just 2.

    Each situation requires different styles.
The only ';best'; way of colouring is the one that you're best at and is most comfortable for you, so it's really something you have to work out for yourself by practicing different techniques. There are many ways of doing it, so if the ones you tried so far aren't hitting the spot, keep looking!

Certain techniques do work better with certain art styles, so if you posted some examples of your work I may be able to make some suggestions.

If you can afford to buy some learning materials, the video tutorials here are fantastic: http://www.digitalarttutorials.com/ A couple of them are free to download, so definitely get those, but look through the others too - the artist tackles a different colouring style in each volume (comics, anime, photorealism etc) and they're really worth getting if you find one that looks interesting to you.

Anyone have tips for painting skin? cause it did not come out right...Digital painting (realistic) help?
art is actually pretty good, does appear some what vectored, but still good, suggest keeping that as one step and use duplicate to continue,

with program try using airbrush tool with less pressure and or create new brush with less hardness on edges, if you are using tablet, adjust pressure settings to be in sync with editor settings,

some hair techniques vary, simple strokes are good, usually with tablet, another method is using pen tool to draw lines, and then convert path to stroke, then with set of strokes duplicate in new layer and use as stamp/brush and repeat,

use separate layers for each item or part, hair/ face/ eyes, save main program file, you can use gradient blend for some selections, the smudge and blur tools to mix and blend,

other note is that the shading is separate from shadows, you can apply different tones to add curvature effect to face, yet the shadowing from light source sometimes is forgotten, try new over layer, and use black/gray to only add shadow from choice of light source and highlites, the use overlay layer mode to combine,

    ________

sometimes images are re edited in vector format or posterized to separate color levels, for some creative design, some use 3d poser editors to make characters, the repaint as image rendering,

I was bored, so I created a small scene in photoshop. helpful criticism is wanted. Don't just say; ';oh, you must be a n00b at photoshop'; Tell me what I need to improve, please. Besides...I'm still only 14, I have plenty of time to work on it ( and I am still pretty new to ps) :-)

    THANKS!Criticism wanted on digital painting...?
Thats pretty good for being only 14. Keep working at it and if you have the option in high school to take a digital art or a graphic design class, take it. You're around the same age when I discovered photoshop and I'm now 21 and about to graduate from college with my bachelors degree in graphic design!

Keep up the great work and look for different tutorials and keep playing with it!

If you want me to give you constructive criticism I will. The basic thing you need to work on is the composition of the image. Everything is in the center and its too predictable. The patch above the ball itself is just there, there is no purpose to it. Everything in every piece of artwork has a purpose for being there. I would maybe make a couple glass balls or shrink your composition. Colors are key as well, make sure they are complementary in your work. A easy way to get into that habit is by taking one color and using different shades of it. Keep those basic things in mind and it should help you.

    Good luck!

Any camera with bulb as one of the shutter speed options will do what you want.

You will need a 1) tripod, 2) a remote shutter release and 3) a few penlights or LED lights of different colours.

You can adjust the exposure of the lights (to get more saturation) by adjusting the aperture on the lens until you can get the perfect exposureLight painting with digital?
If you can't get the shutter to stay open for more than a few seconds you can take several pictures, each with part of your light painting, and then layer them in a program like photoshop. The camera should be held still with a tripod or clamp.

Put each photo in a different layer and use the difference command in the layers menu to merge the images.
Which digital camera do you have?

If it will allow you to keep the shutter open for 5 seconds or more then you are halfway there. A couple of other useful things to have are a tripod and shutter remote. Very handy.

I am an art collector and have been doing this for twenty some years. I have lots of Friends that do the same. While we all buy different stuff our objective in buying is similar. So here is how I buy art- I will purchase a piece in any medium as long as it has the elements of composition and great technique. I allocate an amount of money to purchase ';new artists'; and ';new mediums';. I primarily colletc grand masters: Picasso, Dali, Max, Durer ect. I always think the next great artist is now starting to produce. It could be you! I also love to support artists.
it wouldnt matter to me. Art is beautiful in any form, as long as the quality of the print is excellent.
It depends on how much it costs compared to the real thing. A person's concept of art varies from person to person. My art collection includes seriolithographs, lithographs, watercolors, oil on canvas, acryllics on canvas, etc.
I accutally find good quality digital pictures on websites and copy them and just print them on my photo printer.. Much cheaper to me that way. :)

    Digital painting on LCD monitor?

To the digital painters out there:

What kind of monitor do you have? Recently I got an LCD monitor but I find that painting with it is so much different. For instance, if I sit low on my chair the colours appear darker than when I look down on it. I find this very annoying and I'm afraid my art might come over differently to other people with different monitor settings.

Is it best to have a CRT monitor when painting?

    Please give me your opinion.

    Thanks.Digital painting on LCD monitor?
Every display or print device needs to have its color calibrated. Buy a color calibrator and use it.Digital painting on LCD monitor?
That all deends on your preference. CRT monitors can change to multiple resoultions and still look good. (800X600 or 1024X768) and the color is represented more realisticly. Most professional desginers will never use an LCD monitor! CRTs are also substantially cheaper than LCDs! On the other hand, LCDs are lighter, consumer less energy, and are thinner. If you want a CRT, try to get an expensiver model. If you get an LCD, make sure it has a wide Viewing Angle. That means how many degrees you can look from the top, bottom or side of the screen without the colors getting distorted or looking weird. I hope this helps you! Add details to your question if I left out anything and I will edit my answer to try to help you!

I am starting to get interested in Digital Art, and would like to know how to paint it....I would like to know a good software to start with and then a good website were I can learn the basics of digital painting.

    Good beginning programs are:

    http://opencanvas.en.softonic.com/ (free)

http://www.ambientdesign.com/ Very good and cheap ($25). There's a starter edition that's free (scroll to the middle of the page).

    http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/u鈥?/a> ($90)

The basics of digital painting are the basics of painting. There's little difference. BUT... save your pennies and buy a small tablet and pen. There are used and refurbished ones out there that are cheaper than new. It's difficult to paint with a mouse or trackball because there's no pressure effect (the paint line gets darker and wider as you press down on the brush and lighter and narrower as you let up the brush pressure.)

    Digital painting?

what kind of programs do I need if I want to start digital painting? Corel painter? Photoshop? I just don't know where to start.Digital painting?
I highly recommend Corel Painter. This is easy to use for beginners and will give you very professional results too.Digital painting?
Almost any program would be good for starting - I use Paint Shop Pro, which doesn't cost much, but I strongly suggest you get a Wacom tablet with a pen and get the replacement extra flexible tips. The software has an option for each ';tool'; as to what the pressure does (change color, change line width, change hue, etc.) and it gives a much more brush like action.
I've seen a wide assortment of programs used, from as simple as oekaki and Microsoft paint to Photoshop CS2. All of which produced great works of art. It all depends on how well you can use the program in question.

What is the best way to take a digital image of a painting...?

...without studio lights or light meters. What is the best way to take a digital image of a painting...?
I guess you are going to shoot it with a digital camera. I have been taking pictures of paintings for years and it is the best way. Take it outside on a cloudy day and shoot them so they are not in direct sunlight. You will get the full spectrum light and you will not get those flash marks or glare. Shoot from about 4 feet away. What is the best way to take a digital image of a painting...?

If you put something (ie. canvas painting) over a digital thermostats will it effect temp in my house?

My thermostat is in the middle of my living room wall (its an eye sore).

Just curious if placing a painting on top of it, will really effect how my thermostat works.

Thanks in advance If you put something (ie. canvas painting) over a digital thermostats will it effect temp in my house?
Yes - your thermostat measures the temperature of the house in order to control the heating or a/c system. If you cover it the thermostat cannot do it's job properly. If you put something (ie. canvas painting) over a digital thermostats will it effect temp in my house?
Yes it will affect it. If you really want to cover you can, it will just take longer for the thermostat to adjust to temp change
Yes it will. It will prevent the free circulation of air.

Light painting with a Digital CAmera?

I have a canon IXY digital 900IS camera and I am very intrested in light painting. CAn I do this and set in the right settings and if so , how?Light painting with a Digital CAmera?
The minimum shutter speed on your camera is 15 seconds. You'll have to be in Manual Mode and set the shutter speed and then use the self-timer to hold the shutter open. If your camera has a tripod socket then use a tripod. If it doesn't then sit it on a firm support. You might get some acceptable results at 15 seconds.

  • I noticed casio, samsung and the like digital cameras are made in china, do they contain lead paint or material

Big-name companies like Casio and Samsung usually have their own plants in China (they do not outsource AFAIK) and run their factories under strict quality control to preserve their reputation. That said, it's highly unlikely that their products would contain toxins. The whole lead/magnet thing was blown way out of proportion anyway.I noticed casio, samsung and the like digital cameras are made in china, do they contain lead paint or material
Nope, are you planning on eating a few hundred cameras?I noticed casio, samsung and the like digital cameras are made in china, do they contain lead paint or material
Very, very unlikely, and even it if did, you would probably have to EAT the camera before it would harm you.

How do you get paint off of a digital camera?

so, i just bought a camera 4 days ago, and i was spray-painting a project for my class. i got the paint on my hands and touched my camera and it got blue spray-paint on it. it is a Sanyo VPC SIO70. i was told to use fingernail polish remover, but it didn't work. what would get the paint off of my digital camera without damaging it!

i payed like 75 dollars for it, so it is replaceable, i just don't want to have to buy a new one. PLZ give me a solution!!!!!How do you get paint off of a digital camera?
Did you get it on the lens?

If it's not really affecting the functionality of the camera, don't worry too much about it. Using most paint thinners/ solvents will damage the finish of the camera and make it worse.

If it's on the lens, it's likely a lost cause. The lenses are treated and removing the paint would remove some of that as well.

How is the digital image processing of photographs related to bitmapped painting ?

How is the digital image processing of photographs related to bitmapped painting ? thank uHow is the digital image processing of photographs related to bitmapped painting ?
A paint program and a photoretouch program both operate on pixels. The are discrete points in an image whether captured from a camera or generated in a paint program. The differences are related to the effects and image processing you employ. In photo processing you often want to correct color, brightness, crop, and clean up an image. In painting you use brushes and other tools to create an image. Paint vs Photo retouch have a lot of tools in common, though. And you may use either tool in many circumstances.

Photoshop is an awesome program for digital painting, but you need skills, and obviously know how to draw.

    What you need to start:

Photoshop or Corel Painter (basically the same)

A Tablet pen (makes your life easier cuz is like traditional painting, but your mouse will do it, just open the bottom thing takt the ball out and clean it, ull notice dust that will interfere with the friction)

The easiest and best way would be to add a starburst for a ';glint'; using the Paintbrush tool.

Here's an old Photoshop tutorial. It's easy enough that if you know where PSP's basic tools are, you should be able to do it.

    http://www.webdesign.org/photoshop/speci鈥?/a>

You can convert Photoshop brushes for use in Paint Shop Pro:

Paint Shop Pro, in Effects%26gt;Illumination Effects, try the Sunburst but I don't think it's ';glinty'; enough to give the sparkle you want.

(I needed some starbursts last year and just made some and did File%26gt;Export%26gt;Custom Brush so they're mine forever;-)

Additional: I found this Xero Graphics Starburst plugin. It will work in PSP. Just unzip and put into the plugins folder in the My PSP folder in Documents.

Adobe Photoshop is the bestWhat are some digital painting programs?
Yep Photoshop is the best...Others like Corel products - like Painter X or something....which I too love....A free PS alternative that some like to use is called GIMP. YOu may want to check that product out.

There's a freebi painting only program Called ArtRage as well.
Adobe Photoshop of course gets a lot of rave reviews. The free alternative is Gimp, or The Gimp as it's sometimes called. There's also Corel Painter, the free alternative I know if is called Artweaver. There is another program I found for free called Saia 5. You can also find Open Canvas 1.1 (which allows you to network with someone else so you can draw together) around the net for free. Or if you'd like it's small enough where I can e-mail it to you. And as someone else mentioned there is the free version of ArtRage. Oh and there is also Paint Shop Pro which is similar to Adobe Photoshop.

On one last related note, it's always good to know what you intend to use the software for. For instance if you want to use it for digital painting using a tablet, I'd suggest open canvas because the program is meant specifically for tablets and their pressure sensitivity.

How do I remove branding (it looks painted on) from the outside of a digital camera?

I want to get the brand and model number off of this camera (it is going to be used somewhere we don't want our competitors to see exactly what equipment we are using). I read somewhere using sugar on a towel as an abrasive but that didn't do anything. Any other ideas? How do I remove branding (it looks painted on) from the outside of a digital camera?
You could try some black enamel paint, like that used on plastic models from a hobby store. Simply cover it up.

Black electrical tape is also used by some; others use a black sharpie.

Just about anything that could chemically remove the paint/decal would probably damage your plastic exterior of your camera too.How do I remove branding (it looks painted on) from the outside of a digital camera?
Try goo gone or something if it is a sticker.

Nail polish remover might work, as well.

If not, try using an exacto blade to scratch at it lightly and it will chip off.
Cover it with black electrical tape. Or what ever color the camera is.
Don't use nail polish remover. It will destroy not only the paint but the plastic also. Just cover it with tape of the same color as the camera.

Best way to take digital pic of a colored pencil painting?

My father has a 16'; x 20'; picture that is an original and he refuses to 'unframe' it (glass, etc), but has allowed me to take a digital picture of it and to make a print. I have a decent camera (Canon XT) with some good lenses. I need to know the best way to capture this. Thank youBest way to take digital pic of a colored pencil painting?
I have a regular thing where I have to take pictures of photos or other artwork under glass and it's a pain in the butt.

You have some good info in the answers above, so synthesize them all and go for it. Here's some more food for thought...

My own suggestion, since you have 100% access to the framed print would be to take it outside and put it on an easel in total shade. You will have a problem with reflections from behind you. A polarizer can help. (See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei鈥?/a> for a demo.)

If you can find a totally blank wall to use and you set-up so that the wall is behind you, it's a start. You may have to intentionally shoot from below the framed piece to avoid getting a reflection and then use a distortion correction in Photoshop (etc) after the fact.

If you can not find a blank wall, hang a dark blanket on a line and use that as a background behind YOU - not behind the framed piece. If you can use TWO blankets, you can poke the camera lens out from between the two of them and then you only have one little bit to worry about getting a bad reflection. If you don't care about the blanket, cut a hole in it to match your lens diameter.

Set a good white balance or at least use the ';Cloudy Day'; preset. (See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei鈥?/a> for a WB demo.) If you can not do a custom WB setting, use the daylight and cloudy day settings and one will probably be close. Having the painting at your disposal will also allow you to adjust the white balance in Photoshop with the original at your side.

    Use a tripod.

Add this up with the answers you have above, set aside an hour for testing and the final shot, and you will get a good result.Best way to take digital pic of a colored pencil painting?

Defused sunlight coming in from a window at an angle that does not reflect off the glass and a polorizer.

I like to keep things simple, no artificial lighting to set up and hassle with. My way, 10 minutes, set up the lights method, 1/2 an hour to an hour, maybe more depending if everything works seemlessly or not. .
the standard way is 2 difussed lights at 45s to the painting, a polariser would be good for reflections, a tripod

    a
The picture is still in the glass frame? Make sure the photo is really well lit, but also that there is no glare coming from the light itself since it's in a glass frame(i think). I have a canon XT also, make sure it's on manual, and just keep experimenting. A standard lens would work fine too.
I would use a tripod to steady the camera. Take the flash off. Get a straight forward shot. I usually just try different angles or try with the flash on or off. One thing I found out is when I take the flash off, I have to keep my hands very still otherwise my pictures blur. Also, you might try taking the picture and laying it flat, even in the frame, and stand above it or angle the camera above it. That might help, too. Hope I helped at least a little bit. Good luck.

The best program for that is called Corel Painter X, or its cheaper stripped down version caller Painter Essentials. These are wonderful prgrams to draw and paint digially with the aid of a wacom drawing tablet. There is a process called cloneing where Corel alows you to use digital brushes over an image, so rather than applying a filter to an entire image equally, you are actually painting a filter stroke by stroke where you want it. Different brushes give you different looking effect, some look like oil, some charcol, some pastels, ect.Digital Photos Changed to Resemble a Painting?

if you don't want shadows you wold have to paint in a dark colour but if you have lighting it may still shadow anyway. think about what you are filming and how the colour choice may affect it
Probably a darker color, maybe a navy blue or a red or maroon, mahogany
Blue, not a light light blue but not a dark blue. Kinda a med. Blue
black it makes the thing u are photographing stick out more
Dappled, pink, mauve, light purple, light blue, white. You dapple it like clouds across the sky.
Only dark colors will hide shadows, but that isn't always the best backdrop. I would pick a neutral color (off-white or light brown) and just work with camera angles and lighting to avoid shadows.
You can not avoid shadows. No matter what color you paint. Your shadows depend on the intensity of the flash lights you use, and the no. of flash lights you use, and your camera aperature/iso settings. Secondly, never paint the wall to use as a backdrop for photography. Always buy a screen (which you can replace any time). Good luck!

Depends how serious you want to be about it or what result you wish to have. Another way that hasn鈥檛 been described yet would be to get a computer drawing tablet (www.wacom.com), put the photo next to you and start painting.
If your willing to spend money you can buy Microsoft Digital Image 2006 it will show you how it is extremely easy
scan to computer %26amp; edit it
I know there is a place in Long Beach WA that does this but I can';t remember the name. Studio Max in Beaverton OR will do this on portraits it has taken.
Scan it at 300 dpi into your computer. with adobe photoshop select filters. Choose one of the artistic filters, play with them until you find the one that gives the results you want. fun fun fun.

Corel Painter X is a great tool as well. Has some really great brushes, and is possibly the most realistic painting software out there.

Depends on what you mean by ';painting';. If you are talking photos, the best is PhotoShop, but the full version is very expensive. Check out Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro. You can try trial versions of either or both of these before you try.

If you are talking ';graphics';, than Illustrator is the best in my book, Corel Draw is a close second: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/u鈥?/a>
Use this link to view a sample of ArtRage. Then if u like that, the software itself is only $25.

What does ';Digital Painting & Airbrushing'; mean?

    What's the relation between';Digital'; %26amp; Airbrushes?What does ';Digital Painting %26amp; Airbrushing'; mean?
Digital paintings/airbrushes are just what they sound like... paintings created digitally, with a computer. Photoshop and Corel Painter are the most commonly used software for digital painting. These softwares have tools that can mimic the look of a real painting or airbrushing. Painter is designed to be more like real painting, Photoshop's paintbrush tool is simpler but can achieve the same effect in the right hands. What does ';Digital Painting %26amp; Airbrushing'; mean?
Sounds kinda like something to do with photoshop

    Best program for digital painting?

which version of photoshop? or maybe corel painter?Best program for digital painting?
if your looking to just mess around with the picture (i.e. Render,Filter,Distort, gray scale etc.) then use Photoshop CS3 because thats used mainly for that purpose. It has over hundreds of neat tools into it. Its best to use the most updated version. There is a new version *CS4 but im not too familiar with it.

Corel is just to fix stuff such as red eye and pixalate the picture so it looks more crisp and add frame over it and some other tools.Best program for digital painting?
between painter and photoshop it really comes down to personal preference.

I suggest photoshop -CS4 is fantastic, If you have a decent video card it has canvas rotate features- and there are a million tutorials and custom brushes to be found floating around the internet.

I've heard great things about painter but the free resources for photoshop are more extensive just because it's the more popular program.

Before CS4 I used photoshop 7 and I've used CS - both are great but CS4 really stands out because of the rotate feature. It's about time they implemented it.!
