Hi there. I have experience in this issue so I thought I'd try to answer your question. The best resource for digital painting that I know of on the internet is http://conceptart.org/. The forums there are bursting at the seams with digital painters and concept artists from around the world, many of which work in the video game industry. There is much to be learned there. They also offer digital painting workshops on video.

On the other hand, if you're looking for more hands-on training, I would take a few classes at an art center. Most major cities have some sort of art center (such as this one, in my city: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/dougherty/school.htm) that offers low-cost workshops for a variety of subjects. If your particular community art center/school does not offer digital painting classes, I would hit up the community college in your area.

In regards to tools, you definitely need a tablet. I would recommend Wacom's Intuos or Cintiq models. Both are great, it's just a matter of what you can afford to spend on a tablet. I have used their products for over 5 years with no issues. You'll also need a decent scanner, because scanning line art into Photoshop or Painter is pretty common in this line of work.

When you have a solid portfolio of digital paintings, try posting them around the internet and getting some feedback. Game-centric sites like http://www.neogaf.com/, who have scores of developers visiting the forums, are great places to get noticed by potential employers. In addition, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and DeviantArt are great places to build steam and get your name out there. Before you know it, people will be knocking down your door.
